Purdue vs Michigan State campus size: which feels bigger for students?

The biggest day-to-day tradeoff is that Michigan State tends to feel more physically expansive and spread out, while Purdue usually feels denser and easier to navigate on foot. MSU’s East Lansing campus has a more park-like layout with long stretches of green space, a river, and academic buildings that can feel farther apart. Purdue’s West Lafayette campus is also large, but the main academic core feels more compact, with many student-heavy areas clustered closer together.

For walking around as a student, Michigan State often feels bigger because distances between dorms, classes, dining halls, and activity spaces can be more noticeable. A lot of students there use bikes, buses, or longer walks as part of normal daily life. Purdue certainly involves plenty of walking too, but many students experience the central campus as tighter and more concentrated, especially around academic buildings and engineering-related areas.
