Is Purdue or UCLA more fun as a college experience?

UCLA tends to feel more fun for the typical student, mainly because of its location, weather, and the range of things to do both on and off campus. Westwood gives you a dense college-town feel inside Los Angeles, so students can go from campus events to beaches, concerts, museums, and food spots without the social scene depending only on campus itself. Purdue can absolutely be fun, but its day-to-day experience is more centered on the university and the rhythm of West Lafayette.

One big difference is what students do when they are not in class. At UCLA, student life spills into the city: weekend plans might include Santa Monica, Koreatown, live shows, hiking, or just hanging out in Westwood. That creates a wider variety of social options, especially for students who like spontaneity and being around energy beyond campus. Purdue has strong campus traditions, Big Ten sports, and a real school-spirit culture, but the surrounding area is quieter and more limited.

The social vibe also feels different. UCLA is busy, image-conscious in some corners, and more spread across many scenes, from arts to activism to sports to LA nightlife. Purdue is often described as friendlier in a more straightforward, community-based way, with a social life built more around residence halls, student organizations, Greek life, and athletic events. For some students, that tighter campus-centered environment is actually more enjoyable because it is easier to find a consistent circle.

Weather matters more than people admit. UCLA’s climate makes it easier to be outside year-round, and that affects everything from casual hangouts to late-night walks to campus events. Purdue has plenty of school spirit and traditions, but long winters can make the semester feel more enclosed. If “fun” means variety, off-campus energy, and a more active everyday atmosphere, UCLA has the edge.
