Fordham or Syracuse for legal studies: which is better for undergraduate pre-law preparation?

Fordham has the edge for undergraduate pre-law preparation. Its location in New York City gives you much easier access to internships at law firms, courts, nonprofits, and government offices during the academic year, which matters a lot if you want sustained exposure to legal work before applying to law school. Fordham also has a well-established pre-law advising setup and a long-standing connection to a respected law school environment.

One big differentiator is access to the legal market while you are still an undergraduate. At Fordham, especially from Lincoln Center and even from Rose Hill with a commute, students can realistically build a resume with semester-time internships and networking in Manhattan. Syracuse can absolutely offer internships too, but the day-to-day density of legal opportunities is not the same.

Another difference is how naturally Fordham connects undergrads to a law-focused academic culture. Fordham Law is a prominent part of the university, and that tends to translate into stronger visibility for pre-law events, alumni connections, and legal speakers. Even if you do not need a specific “legal studies” major to get into law school, being around that ecosystem can make it easier to explore different legal paths early.

Fordham also tends to be the more advantageous platform if your goal is to enter law school with polished professional experience, especially in corporate, public interest, or city-based legal settings. Syracuse is still a solid option, and its communications and public affairs strengths can pair well with law-related interests, but for the strongest overall undergraduate launch toward law school, Fordham is the more compelling choice.
