Is Lehigh or Boston University better for biology?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and setting: Boston University gives you a much larger research environment tied to a major medical city, while Lehigh offers a smaller, more personal undergraduate experience where it can be easier to build close relationships with professors early. For biology and pre-med, that difference matters because BU puts you near extensive hospitals, labs, and biotech opportunities in Boston, while Lehigh often gives undergraduates more direct faculty access and a less crowded path to leadership in labs and campus organizations.

At BU, biology students benefit from the university’s location and its strong life sciences ecosystem. Being in Boston can make clinical exposure, shadowing, internships, and outside research more accessible, which is a real advantage for pre-med students who want options beyond campus. BU also has the resources and course breadth you would expect from a large research university, though that can come with bigger introductory classes and more competition for some opportunities.

Lehigh is strong in the sciences too, but the experience tends to feel more contained and undergraduate-focused. Biology majors often find it easier to get to know faculty, ask for mentorship, and stand out in smaller classes. That can be especially helpful for recommendation letters, lab access, and advising. The tradeoff is that Bethlehem does not offer the same density of hospitals and biomedical institutions that Boston does, so some opportunities may require more intentional planning.

If your priority is maximum research and medical exposure in a major city, BU has the edge. If you want a more personal academic environment where faculty connection and undergraduate visibility come more naturally, Lehigh is very appealing. For most students specifically focused on biology with pre-med or research in mind, I would lean Boston University because the surrounding ecosystem adds tangible advantages that are hard to replicate.
