What is student life like at Lehigh and George Washington if you want a more city-oriented college experience?

The biggest practical difference is that George Washington is embedded in a major city every day, while Lehigh is much more of a traditional campus experience with a smaller city nearby rather than fully surrounding you. At GW, Washington, DC is part of student life in a literal sense: academic buildings, residence halls, internships, restaurants, museums, and Metro access are woven into the same urban grid. At Lehigh, students are centered on a distinct campus in Bethlehem, and although South Bethlehem has shops, restaurants, and local events, the city is more of a complement to campus life than the setting for it.

At GW, daily life tends to feel independent and outward-facing. Students often leave campus between classes, use the city for food and entertainment, and take advantage of internships, political events, cultural institutions, and neighborhoods across DC. The campus can feel less enclosed and less traditionally collegiate because the university blends into Foggy Bottom, so the city is not an occasional outing, it is the environment.

Lehigh feels more residential and campus-driven. There is a stronger sense of a defined student community because people are more likely to socialize through campus organizations, school events, Greek life, athletics, and gatherings centered around the university itself. Bethlehem does add character, especially with its restaurants, local arts scene, and events like Musikfest, but most students would probably describe the school first as a campus community and second as a city experience.

If your priority is a genuinely city-oriented college experience where the surrounding area shapes your routine every day, George Washington fits that much more clearly. Lehigh can still offer things to do off campus, but it will not feel nearly as urban or as integrated with city life as GW.
