Purdue vs NYU for finance: which is better for career opportunities?
I’m trying to decide between Purdue and NYU for finance and I keep seeing different opinions online. I’m mostly focused on which school gives better career opportunities after graduation, especially for getting internships and a first job in finance.
I’m a high school junior/senior and I want to understand how these two schools compare for finance recruiting and alumni connections.

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct access to the finance industry versus a more traditional campus experience at a lower cost. For finance specifically, NYU has a clear location advantage because being in New York puts students much closer to internships during the school year, alumni working across banking, asset management, and related fields, and frequent employer contact. Purdue can still lead to strong outcomes, but it is not as naturally plugged into finance recruiting in the same way.
If your goal is front-office finance opportunities, especially investment banking, sales and trading, buy-side roles, or high-volume finance internships during college, NYU usually offers the stronger platform. Stern is especially well known in finance, and even beyond Stern, NYU benefits from deep employer recognition and a very large alumni base in New York. That matters because finance hiring often runs through networking, coffee chats, informational interviews, and quick access to firms during the semester.
Purdue has solid business and quantitative strengths, and it can be a very good option for corporate finance, consulting-adjacent paths, analytics, fintech, and some investment roles, particularly if you are proactive. Its alumni network is strong overall, but it is broader than finance-specific. You may need to work harder to break into the most competitive finance tracks, especially compared with students who can intern in Manhattan while classes are in session.
Cost matters a lot here. If Purdue would leave you with much less debt, that can outweigh NYU’s recruiting edge, especially since finance careers do not all pay the same right away and outcomes depend heavily on your performance, internships, and networking. But on career opportunities alone, NYU has the stronger finance ecosystem and better immediate proximity to employers.
