Is University of Rochester or Columbia better for finance careers?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and finance is my main goal after college. Both seem strong in different ways, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one gives better overall opportunities for recruiting, networking, and breaking into finance.

I’m mainly interested in which school has the stronger reputation for finance outcomes and access to internships or jobs in the field.

For finance careers, Columbia has the clearer edge. Its New York City location, stronger brand recognition on Wall Street, and much deeper on-campus access to major banks and buy-side firms make it the more direct pipeline for recruiting, networking, and internships. If your main priority is maximizing exposure to finance opportunities during college and right after graduation, Columbia is the school with the stronger overall platform.

Columbia fits the student who wants to be immersed in the finance ecosystem from the start. Being in Manhattan matters in a practical way: semester internships are far more realistic, alumni events and coffee chats happen constantly, and firms that recruit heavily in finance already know the school well.

Rochester makes more sense for a student who wants a smaller, more flexible academic environment and is comfortable being more proactive about building a finance path. It has strong academics, a respected business-related presence through Simon, and solid outcomes for motivated students, but it is not plugged into finance recruiting at the same level. You can absolutely reach finance from Rochester, especially with strong grades, internships, and networking, though the process is usually less automatic and more self-driven.

In terms of reputation specifically for finance outcomes, Columbia carries more weight. Recruiters in the field are more likely to have long-established pipelines there, and the alumni base in top finance hubs is much denser. Rochester is a good school, but for finance access, employer familiarity, and networking scale, Columbia offers a noticeably stronger launch point.
