UT Austin vs Northwestern for undergraduate research opportunities
I’m trying to decide between UT Austin and Northwestern, and research access is a big factor for me. I want to do undergraduate research early if possible, ideally in a setting where it is realistic to get involved as a freshman or sophomore.
I know both schools have strong academics, but I’m mostly wondering which one tends to offer better opportunities for undergrads to join labs, work with professors, and build research experience.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access: UT Austin has a huge research enterprise with a lot of labs and institutes, while Northwestern tends to make faculty access and early undergraduate involvement feel more manageable because the undergraduate population is smaller. One other factor is competition within your field. At both places, very high-demand labs can be selective, but at UT you may be competing inside a much larger student ecosystem. At Northwestern, there are still competitive labs, especially in popular STEM areas, yet the smaller undergraduate environment can make outreach feel less anonymous.
