Northwestern vs Caltech for STEM prestige: how do employers and grad schools compare them?

I’m trying to understand how these two schools are viewed in STEM, especially for internships, jobs, and grad school admissions. I know Caltech has a huge reputation for science and engineering, but Northwestern also seems very strong and well respected.

I’m not just looking at rankings. I want to know how the prestige difference actually matters in real life for a student who wants a STEM career.

If you are deciding based on career outcomes alone, Caltech gives you more niche scientific signal, while Northwestern often gives you more pathways and a wider professional platform.
