UCLA’s location in Westwood and Los Angeles gives students constant access to restaurants, apartments, concerts, beaches, and nightlife, so the weekend scene often extends beyond campus. Northwestern, by contrast, is in Evanston with Chicago accessible, but the social scene is more likely to revolve around campus organizations, residence halls, Greek life, performances, and house gatherings.

Day to day, UCLA usually feels more visibly busy and social simply because there are so many students moving through campus and many ways to plug in.
