Is the University of Michigan or Ohio State better for national reputation?

University of Michigan has the stronger national reputation overall. Outside the Midwest, Michigan is more often recognized as a top-tier public university with broad academic prestige, while Ohio State is very well known but more often associated first with its size, alumni network, and athletics.

One big differentiator is academic brand. Michigan is widely viewed as one of the flagship public universities in the country, and that reputation extends across many departments, from engineering and business to social sciences and public policy. Ohio State is respected nationally too, but its academic reputation is usually a notch less elevated in broad public perception.

Another difference is how each school is talked about outside college admissions circles. Michigan is often grouped with the most prestigious public institutions in the U.S., so people in different regions are likely to recognize it as an elite public university. Ohio State has enormous name recognition, but a lot of that comes from Big Ten sports visibility and the sheer size of the institution rather than the same level of across-the-board academic prestige.

That said, Ohio State is still a strong national brand and can be excellent depending on your major. But if your question is purely about overall national reputation when someone hears the name, Michigan comes out ahead.
