Which is generally more fun for an undergraduate student: William & Mary or Rutgers?

Rutgers has Big Ten sports, a much larger student body, and access to the New Brunswick area plus relatively easy trips to New York and Philadelphia. William & Mary has a more contained residential feel, traditions that students care about, and a social life that often revolves around friend groups, clubs, and campus events rather than sheer scale.

If by “fun” you mean constant activity, lots of people, more party options, and major school-spirit events around athletics, Rutgers will usually feel livelier. There are simply more students, more types of social circles, and more going on at any given time. That can make it easier to find your niche, especially if you like variety and do not mind a larger, more spread-out environment.

William & Mary can absolutely be enjoyable, but the energy is different. Students often describe it as more intimate and community-oriented, with strong involvement in clubs, traditions, and friendships built through repeated interaction. The flip side is that some students find it quieter on weekends and less outwardly electric than a giant public university.

For finding friends, Rutgers gives you volume and diversity, but it can take more initiative because the campus system is larger and less naturally unified. William & Mary often makes it easier to become a familiar face quickly, which can help if you prefer a close community over a huge social marketplace.
