Is William & Mary or the University of Michigan better for economics majors?
I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list, and I keep seeing William & Mary and the University of Michigan come up for economics. I’m interested in a school where the econ program is strong and respected for internships and grad school prep.
I’m trying to understand which one has the better overall economics program for an undergraduate student.

For undergraduate economics, the University of Michigan usually offers more sheer scale, course variety, and research access, while William & Mary stands out for smaller classes, closer faculty interaction, and a more intimate academic environment. Michigan’s economics department is large and very visible, with strong connections to policy, business, and quantitative work, and its location in Ann Arbor plus its alumni network can help with internships and recruiting. William & Mary’s economics program is well respected too, especially for students who want serious academic training in a smaller setting where it may be easier to know professors well and build strong recommendations for graduate school.
Michigan makes the most sense for a student who wants a big university with lots of options inside and around economics. You would likely find more upper-level electives, more student organizations tied to finance, public policy, consulting, and data analysis, and more pathways to combine economics with math, statistics, political science, or business-adjacent opportunities. That breadth can matter if you are still figuring out whether you want to aim at industry, policy, or PhD-level study.
William & Mary fits a student who wants economics in a more discussion-oriented, undergraduate-centered setting. It is especially appealing if you value access to professors, smaller class sizes earlier on, and an environment where teaching is a central priority. For grad school prep, that can be a real advantage because close faculty mentorship often translates into stronger research guidance and more personal letters.
If the question is which has the stronger overall program in reputation and opportunity volume, Michigan has the edge. If the question is where an undergraduate may get more individualized attention while still studying rigorous economics, William & Mary is very compelling.
