Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or the University of Washington more selective for undergraduate admissions?

I’m trying to compare these two schools as part of my college list and keep seeing both mentioned as pretty competitive. I know selectivity can depend on the program, but I’m mainly wondering which one is generally more selective overall for undergrad admissions.

The University of Washington is typically a bit more selective for undergraduate admission as a whole, especially for non-resident applicants. Both schools are competitive, but UW’s Seattle campus draws a very large applicant pool and has a more constrained capacity, which tends to make admission tighter overall. At the same time, UIUC can be just as hard, or harder, in certain majors, especially in high-demand fields like engineering and computer science.

UW tends to be the tougher admit for students who are applying broadly to the university and are looking at the main Seattle campus experience. It is especially difficult if you are out of state, since Washington residents get priority in a public flagship system and some popular majors have additional capacity limits. UW also uses direct-to-major or capacity-constrained pathways in some areas, so getting into the university does not always mean easy access to your intended program.

UIUC is the school that can feel more selective for students targeting specific academic programs. Its admissions process is very major-conscious, and some colleges and majors are significantly harder to enter than the university overall. That is why applicants interested in computer science, engineering, or business-related paths may find UIUC every bit as competitive, depending on the exact program.

So if you mean overall university-wide undergraduate admission, UW usually has the edge in selectivity. If you mean admission to certain high-demand majors, UIUC can absolutely match or exceed it.
