For finance careers, is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or USC the better choice?

I’m trying to choose between these two schools and I’m mainly interested in finance after college. I know both are strong in different ways, but I want to understand which one usually gives students a better path into finance careers.

I’m especially curious about how each school is viewed by employers in finance and which one seems to lead to stronger internship and job opportunities.

USC usually gives you the clearer edge for finance careers, especially for investment banking, private equity, and other relationship-driven parts of the industry. Its Marshall School has a strong reputation with employers, the Trojan alumni network is unusually active in finance, and Los Angeles puts students closer to internships during the school year. UIUC is excellent academically, but in finance recruiting it tends to be less of a direct target than USC for many firms.

One big differentiator is employer access and alumni pull. USC benefits from a very loyal alumni base that is well known for opening doors, particularly in Southern California, but also in New York and San Francisco. In finance, where referrals, networking, and informal advocacy matter a lot, that can translate into more interview opportunities and warmer introductions.

Another is location. USC students can pursue part-time internships and networking events in Los Angeles much more easily during the semester, which matters for wealth management, corporate finance, real estate finance, asset management, and some banking pipelines. UIUC students can absolutely reach Chicago finance, and Chicago is a major advantage for them, but being in Champaign means access is less immediate during the academic year.

The last important distinction is how each school is perceived in the specific corners of finance students usually mean when they ask this question. USC tends to have stronger placement momentum in high-finance paths where brand, alumni sponsorship, and concentrated recruiting channels matter. UIUC still does very well, especially for students who are proactive, strong quantitatively, and open to corporate finance, accounting-linked finance paths, or Chicago-focused opportunities, but it often requires more self-driven hustle to reach the same outcomes.
