Does UC Berkeley have an Early Decision application option?

I'm trying to plan out my college application timeline and I'm a little confused about how the University of California applications work. Some of my friends are applying Early Decision or Early Action to private schools, but I'm really interested in UC Berkeley and I want to know if they have an Early Decision option.

I checked their website but couldn't find anything super clear about this. Is there any way to indicate you're applying early to Berkeley, or do they only have regular decision for everyone? I just want to be sure I'm not missing out on a chance to submit early or maybe increase my chances somehow.

UC Berkeley, along with all other University of California (UC) campuses, does not offer Early Decision (ED) or Early Action (EA) options. The UC system only has one application period and one decision date for all applicants. There isn't a way to indicate that you want to be considered for early review or to increase your chances by applying early.

The UC application opens on August 1 each year, but the actual submission window is from October 1 to November 30. You won't get an earlier response or special consideration based on when you submit within this timeframe—as long as you submit by the November 30 deadline, your application will be reviewed with all others.

This approach is different from many private and some public universities that offer ED or EA, where students can potentially get an admission decision earlier or make a binding commitment in exchange for priority consideration. At UCs, everyone is on an even playing field in terms of deadlines and notification. Typically, UC Berkeley releases its admission decisions in late March each year.

For example, if you're also applying to Stanford (which has Restrictive Early Action), you’d know your result from Stanford by December, but you’d need to wait until March to hear from Berkeley, regardless of when you submitted your UC application.

So you’re not missing any opportunity by not submitting "early" to Berkeley. Just be sure you complete your application thoroughly and submit it by the UC deadline on November 30. If you're interested in boosting your chances, focus on strong academics, extracurriculars, and compelling essays—rather than the timing of your application.
