UT Austin or Carnegie Mellon for software engineering: which is the better choice for an undergraduate degree?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both UT Austin and Carnegie Mellon keep coming up for software engineering. I know they are both strong schools, but I’m not sure which one would be the better choice specifically for an undergraduate path in software engineering.
I’m looking at them from the perspective of academics, internship opportunities, and how well the degree is respected by employers.

UT Austin usually offers a much more affordable path, especially for Texas residents, and it sits in one of the best tech hiring markets in the country. In terms of employer respect, both degrees are taken very seriously. CMU tends to have a sharper brand specifically for software engineering and computer science, while UT Austin has a powerful reputation overall and especially in Texas and large tech circles. That means CMU may give you a slightly stronger signal on paper, but UT can deliver nearly as much career upside if you take advantage of its recruiting network and location.
If cost is even moderately important, UT Austin is hard to overlook because the return on investment can be exceptional. If cost is manageable and you want the most intensely software-centered undergraduate reputation of the two, Carnegie Mellon is the one I’d place slightly ahead.
