Washington University in St. Louis carries more prestige overall in college admissions and in many professional settings. It is viewed as a highly selective private research university with a strong national academic reputation, while Indiana University is well respected but more often known as a large flagship public university with standout strengths in specific areas rather than the same across-the-board elite branding.

One big difference is how each school is perceived academically across fields. WashU tends to have stronger name recognition in highly selective graduate admissions and among employers in fields like consulting, finance, research, and medicine, partly because of its smaller scale and research environment. Indiana has excellent programs, especially Kelley for business, Jacobs for music, and strong public affairs and media-related options, but outside those areas its reputation is usually less exclusive.

Another differentiator is national versus program-specific reputation. WashU is more likely to be recognized nationwide as a top-tier private university by people who follow higher education closely.
