Arizona State vs Michigan for business: which is better for undergrad?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list for business, and these two schools keep coming up for me. I know both have strong reputations, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is the better choice specifically for an undergraduate business degree.

I’m mainly trying to compare them in terms of overall value for a business major, not just general school prestige.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost and access versus prestige and selectivity. Arizona State’s W. P. Carey School of Business is large, well-resourced, and often offers strong merit scholarships, which can make it a much better value, especially for out-of-state students. Michigan’s Ross School of Business carries more national prestige in undergraduate business and tends to open more doors in high-finance, consulting, and top-tier corporate recruiting, but that advantage often comes with a much higher price.

For undergrad business specifically, Ross has the stronger brand and the more powerful alumni network in the most competitive business paths. Employers know Ross very well, and Michigan’s overall reputation helps too. If you are aiming at investment banking, elite consulting, or very selective internships, Michigan has a clearer edge.

ASU is not a weak option at all. W. P. Carey has a strong reputation, a broad range of business majors, good career services, and strong ties to the Phoenix market, which matters for internships and early work experience. Its size can actually be a plus because there are many programs, student organizations, and recruiting opportunities, though you may need to be more proactive to stand out.

On value, ASU often wins more easily. If ASU would be significantly cheaper, that matters a lot for a business degree, where outcomes depend heavily on internships, networking, and performance, not just school name. Taking on much less debt can be the smarter move, especially if you are not set on the most prestige-driven corners of business.

If cost is anywhere close and you are admitted to Ross, Michigan is the stronger undergraduate business choice. If ASU comes in far cheaper, especially with merit aid, it can absolutely be the better overall value and a very sensible pick for business.
