Is Florida or Columbia better for city life as a college student?

Columbia offers a much more city-centered student experience day to day. Its Morningside Heights campus sits in Manhattan, with dense walkable streets, subway and bus access right outside campus, and the city woven into ordinary routines like getting meals, internships, concerts, and weekend plans. Florida, especially at the University of Florida in Gainesville, has plenty to do for a college town, but it does not feel like living in a major city in the same immediate way.

The biggest difference is transit and walkability beyond campus. At Columbia, students can move around New York without needing a car, and neighborhoods, museums, restaurants, parks, and employers are part of the normal rhythm of student life. Gainesville is bikeable and student-friendly near UF, but the broader area is more spread out and much less connected by the kind of extensive public transit that makes a city feel constantly accessible.

Another clear separator is how integrated the campus is with the surrounding urban environment. Columbia has a defined campus, but you step out and you are still in Manhattan, not in a separate college bubble. UF has an energetic campus and nearby midtown area, yet the experience is still anchored in a classic college-town setup rather than a fully urban one.

That also affects what “things to do” looks like. Columbia students have immediate access to the scale and variety of New York, from cultural institutions to internships during the semester to neighborhoods that all feel distinct. Florida can offer a fun, active social life, but for someone specifically prioritizing a real city feel, easy transit, and feeling connected to the surrounding urban environment, Columbia is the closer match.
