Florida vs UC Berkeley for economics: how much does the school name matter for career opportunities?
I’m trying to decide between these two schools for econ, and I keep hearing that UC Berkeley has a stronger reputation while Florida is still a solid option. I want to go into business or finance after college, so I’m wondering how much the school name actually affects internships, recruiting, and first jobs.
I’m not sure whether the difference would be big enough to matter in the long run, or if I’d be better off choosing the place that fits me better.

For economics with business or finance goals, UC Berkeley’s name does carry more weight, and that can matter in a real way for internships and first jobs. Berkeley is much more plugged into high-finance, consulting, and West Coast recruiting, and employers often know exactly what its economics program represents. Florida is still a respected flagship, but the gap is most noticeable when you are aiming for the most selective finance pipelines rather than broad business careers.
Berkeley makes the biggest difference for a student who wants access to brand-sensitive recruiting. That includes investment banking, selective consulting, top finance internships, and roles where firms sort quickly by school familiarity. Its location, alumni network, and employer presence create more built-in opportunities, especially in California, New York, and major national markets. For an econ student, that can translate into more on-campus events, more alumni already placed at target firms, and less need to explain the strength of your program.
Florida can make a lot of sense for someone whose goals are solid but not narrowly prestige-driven, or who expects to build through grades, leadership, networking, and internships in the Southeast. For corporate finance, commercial banking, wealth management, many business analyst roles, and plenty of regional finance paths, Florida can absolutely get you there. The school name matters less once you are outside the most selective entry points, and after your first couple of jobs, performance tends to matter far more than the diploma line.
What usually makes this decision clearer is how specific your ambitions are. If you already know you want the most competitive finance recruiting channels and are comfortable with a more intense, high-powered environment, Berkeley offers a stronger launchpad. If you want flexibility, may prefer a different campus experience, or would be significantly better positioned academically or financially at Florida, that can outweigh the name gap because outcomes in business are still very dependent on what you do in college, not just where you go.
