Is UMass Amherst or Duke harder to get into?

The biggest practical tradeoff here is that Duke is one of the most selective private universities in the country, while UMass Amherst is a large public flagship with a much broader admissions range. On a broad level, Duke is significantly harder to get into.

That difference comes from both applicant pool and institutional mission. Duke draws a national and international pool of students competing for a relatively small class, so even very qualified applicants are not close to guaranteed admission. UMass Amherst is still a respected and sometimes competitive school, but overall it is nowhere near Duke’s level of selectivity.

Another useful way to think about it is academic profile versus admissions odds. A student who looks very competitive for UMass Amherst may still be a serious reach at Duke. At UMass Amherst, your intended major, residency, and course rigor can matter a lot, but the school is designed to serve a wider range of students than Duke is.

So if your question is simply which one is harder to get into overall, the answer is Duke by a wide margin. UMass Amherst can absolutely be selective in some colleges or majors, but broad admissions difficulty is not especially close between the two.
