For an in-state undergraduate comparing full yearly cost, UMass Boston is often the less expensive option overall, especially if you can live at home. Amherst is the more traditional residential campus, and that setup usually raises the annual bill.

At UMass Boston, the financial picture is more variable. If you commute from home, you can avoid room-and-board costs almost entirely, which can make Boston much cheaper overall. If you need to rent housing in Boston, though, that advantage can shrink because off-campus housing and city living costs can be high, and transportation costs may still matter depending on your commute.
