Is NYU or Temple better for film school?

NYU is the stronger film school overall. If your main goal is maximizing industry access, portfolio-building through a highly recognized program, and being surrounded by a large film community, NYU has the clearer edge.

One major differentiator is industry proximity. Being in New York matters for film students because internships, production assistant work, festivals, studios, and independent film projects are all close by. NYU students benefit from that ecosystem in a very direct way, and Tisch is one of the film programs employers and collaborators already know well.

Another difference is the program’s reputation and network. NYU is one of the most established names in film education, which can help when you are applying for internships, meeting collaborators, or trying to get early career traction. In a field where connections and credibility matter, that recognition is meaningful.

Temple is still a solid option, especially if you want a more affordable path or a less intense admissions process. Its film program can absolutely help you develop technical skills and make projects, and Philadelphia has a creative scene of its own. But in a direct comparison focused on film studies and filmmaking strength, NYU offers more reach, more visibility, and usually more industry-connected opportunities.

The biggest practical caveat is cost. For film, taking on very large debt can limit your flexibility after graduation, so Temple becomes much more compelling if the price difference is major. But purely on program strength, connections, and film-school reputation, NYU comes out ahead.
