Is NYU or American University better for politics majors?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location-based access versus broad-name flexibility: American University puts you in Washington, DC, where internships in government, advocacy, and policy are built into student life, while NYU gives you a larger global brand and a wider urban network but not the same day-to-day proximity to federal politics. For a student who already knows politics or government is the goal, American usually has the more direct setup.

American is especially strong for students who want internships during the semester with Congress, federal agencies, think tanks, NGOs, campaigns, or lobbying firms. Being in DC matters a lot here because you can combine classes with real political work without needing to wait for summer. That kind of access often shapes resumes very quickly.

NYU is still a very solid option for political science, especially if your interests lean more international relations, political theory, public policy with a global angle, law, media, journalism, data, or issue advocacy connected to New York’s nonprofit and media worlds. NYU also has the advantage of being part of a very large university with strong programs across many fields, which can be useful if your interests spill into economics, journalism, business, or global studies.

For a future in electoral politics, government service, policy staffing, or DC-facing public affairs, American has the clearer edge because its ecosystem is so closely tied to that world. NYU is more attractive if you want politics connected to international cities, media influence, or a broader interdisciplinary path.

If the question is simply which school is better for a politics major focused on government and political opportunities, I would give the nod to American University.
