University of Washington vs. CMU for software engineering: which is better for an undergrad CS career path?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for software engineering as a high school senior. Both seem strong for CS, but I’m not sure how much the name, recruiting, and overall opportunities matter once you’re actually in the major.

I want to understand which school is generally the stronger choice for someone who wants to become a software engineer after college.

For a straight software engineering path, Carnegie Mellon has the edge. Its undergraduate CS ecosystem is unusually deep, the School of Computer Science is one of the most established in the country, and the recruiting pipeline into top software, systems, AI, and infrastructure roles is exceptionally strong. University of Washington is also excellent, especially because of its Seattle location and ties to major tech employers, but CMU is the school that more consistently carries extra weight on name, curriculum depth, and national recruiting reach.

One major difference is the academic structure around CS itself. At CMU, computer science is a central institutional strength, with a very rigorous undergraduate program and broad access to advanced coursework across systems, machine learning, theory, robotics, and human-computer interaction. That matters because students aiming for software engineering often benefit from stronger technical training than just learning to code for interviews.

Another differentiator is recruiting reach. UW students absolutely benefit from proximity to Amazon, Microsoft, and the broader Seattle tech market, so local internship access is a real plus. CMU, though, tends to attract recruiters from a wider national set of elite software companies and research-heavy teams, which can make a difference if you want flexibility across regions, specialties, or highly selective engineering roles.

The practical caveat is access to the major. At UW, getting into the most in-demand computing pathways can be a real stress point depending on how you were admitted and what your exact program option is.

Peer environment is another real factor. CMU’s CS student culture is intense, technical, and heavily project-oriented, which often pushes students toward ambitious internships, research, and startup work early. UW has plenty of strong students too, but CMU more often feels like a place where the entire ecosystem is built around producing top-tier computing talent.

Cost can still change the answer. If UW is dramatically cheaper, especially in-state, that financial advantage is meaningful in software engineering because both schools can get you to strong outcomes. But on school-specific strength for an undergrad CS career path, CMU comes out ahead.
