UT Austin or Dartmouth for economics: which is the better choice for an undergraduate economics major?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy. UT Austin gives you a very large economics department inside a huge public university with broad course selection, and easy access to business-adjacent opportunities in Austin. Dartmouth offers a much smaller undergraduate environment, closer faculty access, and a college where undergraduates tend to get more direct attention in classes, advising, and research.

For economics specifically, Dartmouth has a stronger overall undergraduate feel if you want close mentorship and a more personal academic experience. Its size makes it easier to build relationships with professors, which matters for research opportunities and later grad school recommendations. The economics department is well regarded.

UT Austin is still an excellent option, especially if you want breadth and practical access to a major state economy. Being in Austin helps with internships in policy, consulting, tech, and finance-related roles, and the university’s sheer size means lots of adjacent resources, student organizations, and classes. If you are highly self-directed, UT can open a lot of doors, but you may need to be more proactive about seeking out faculty attention and standing out in larger classes.

For internships, the answer is closer: Dartmouth has strong national placement and alumni reach, while UT benefits from location and a huge employer network, especially in Texas.

If the question is which is the better undergraduate economics choice on program strength plus long-term academic support, I would lean Dartmouth. UT Austin becomes more compelling if cost is much lower or if you want to build your career in Texas and are comfortable navigating a bigger, less personal environment.
