Is Williams or UC Berkeley better for pre-med?

Williams is the stronger place for most pre-med students if your priority is close faculty access, easier advising, and a less competitive day-to-day academic environment. Its small liberal arts setting means intro science classes are typically more personal, professors are more accessible, and recommendation letters can be easier to build toward. Berkeley offers outstanding science depth and major hospital and lab connections, but pre-med there can feel much more self-directed and crowded.

At Williams, one of the biggest advantages is how visible you are. In a smaller student body, it is usually easier to know your science professors well, get individualized feedback, and find mentoring early. That matters for pre-med because strong letters, sustained faculty relationships, and help planning coursework and extracurriculars all carry real weight in the med school process.

Berkeley’s clearest edge is research scale. If you want a huge university with extensive lab activity, a wide range of advanced biology and chemistry offerings, and access to a major public research ecosystem, Berkeley has far more volume. The tradeoff is that students often have to be more proactive to secure lab positions, advising attention, and enrollment in impacted courses, especially early on.

Another practical difference is classroom and campus culture. Berkeley pre-med can feel intense because there are so many high-achieving students competing for the same clubs, labs, and top grades in large STEM sequences. Williams is still academically rigorous, but many students find the environment more collaborative and less anonymous, which can make it easier to stay balanced while completing demanding pre-med requirements.

For med school placement, both can work very well. The better environment for most students is the one where you are more likely to earn excellent grades, build close mentoring relationships, and stay motivated over four years, and Williams often makes those pieces easier to put together.
