Is Williams College or Stanford University better for computer science?

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth and scale versus intimacy and undergraduate focus. Stanford offers a much larger computer science ecosystem, with far more upper-level course options, research labs, startup culture, and direct ties to major tech companies in Silicon Valley. Williams gives you small classes, close faculty access, and a strong liberal arts setting, but its CS department is much smaller and the range of specialized offerings is more limited.

For computer science specifically, Stanford is more widely regarded as the stronger option. Its department has exceptional breadth across areas like AI, systems, theory, HCI, and machine learning, and students benefit from a campus culture where tech is deeply embedded in academics, recruiting, and extracurricular life. That matters if you want maximum flexibility to explore subfields, join large-scale research, or be surrounded by peers heavily focused on CS.

Williams can still be an excellent place to study computer science, especially if you want a very strong conceptual foundation and a more personal academic experience. At Williams, undergraduates are the center of the institution, so faculty mentoring is often easier to access and classes tend to be discussion-based and close-knit. For some students, that environment leads to better learning than a large research university.

Still, when people ask which school is considered better for CS in the broader academic and industry sense, the answer is Stanford. It has more resources dedicated specifically to computer science, more specialization within the major, and a much stronger built-in pipeline to top tech internships, research opportunities, and entrepreneurship.
