William & Mary vs Rutgers for research opportunities

If early, faculty-connected undergraduate research is the priority, William & Mary often stands out. It has a strong undergraduate focus, smaller class sizes, and a culture where professors are more likely to know students personally, which can make it easier to find research mentors early. Rutgers offers far more total research activity and many more labs, but the experience can feel more decentralized because it is a much larger public research university.

William & Mary tends to suit the student who wants research woven into the undergraduate experience rather than something they have to actively dig through a huge system to find. The Charles Center is a real asset there, supporting undergraduate research with funding, summer programs, and conference support.

Rutgers fits the student who wants breadth, scale, and the resources of a major research institution.
