Is Washington University in St. Louis or NYU better for theater majors?

NYU is the stronger choice for most students who want the most intensive undergraduate theater training. Its Tisch School of the Arts is one of the best-known drama programs in the country, the curriculum is built around conservatory-style studio work, and being in New York gives students direct access to auditions, internships, and working theater professionals throughout college.

WashU offers a respected theater program, but it is not usually viewed in the same preprofessional lane as NYU Tisch. WashU can be very appealing if you want strong academics across the university, more flexibility to combine theater with another field, and a campus experience that feels more traditional and less conservatory-driven. Students there can still do meaningful performance and production work, but the program is typically broader and less industry-embedded.

Location matters a lot here too. NYU students are studying in the middle of one of the country’s biggest theater hubs, which can shape everything from guest artists to part-time professional opportunities. WashU’s St. Louis setting does have arts resources, but it does not offer the same constant proximity to the commercial and nonprofit theater world that NYU does.

For a student specifically seeking a serious undergraduate theater experience with deep training and strong professional access, NYU has the clearer edge. WashU makes more sense for someone who wants theater to be important, but not necessarily the single dominant center of their college education.
