Drexel or RPI for co-op jobs: which school has better internship and job placement opportunities?

For co-op and internship access specifically, Drexel has the clearer edge. Its co-op program is built into the university’s identity, and being in Philadelphia gives students regular access to employers during the school year rather than only in summer. Drexel also has a very established system for alternating class and work terms, so the work experience is usually more structured and easier to plug into your degree plan.

The biggest differentiator is simply scale and integration. Drexel is one of the best-known co-op schools in the country, and employers that hire Drexel students often expect that cycle and return year after year. That matters because a co-op program works best when companies are already used to the calendar, the recruiting pipeline, and the level of training students have.

Location helps Drexel too. Philadelphia gives students access to a large local job market across engineering, business, computing, health, biotech, and design, and it is close enough to other East Coast hubs that students can tap into more than one region. That makes it easier to find in-semester opportunities and to build experience before full-time recruiting starts.

RPI absolutely places students into strong internships and jobs, especially in engineering, computer science, and technical fields, and its reputation with employers in those areas is real. But RPI is not as co-op-centered in the same way Drexel is, and Troy offers a smaller day-to-day local market than Philadelphia. In practice, that usually means RPI students can still get excellent outcomes, but they may rely more on traditional summer internships, national recruiting, and their own initiative rather than a campus culture built around repeated co-op cycles.
