University of Washington vs Stanford for engineering: how should I compare them for an undergrad engineering major?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools for engineering, and I keep seeing very different opinions online. I know Stanford has a huge reputation, but UW also seems really strong, especially in engineering and tech.

I’m mainly trying to understand how to compare them in a practical way for an undergraduate engineering student, beyond just prestige.

Stanford is the more advantageous choice for most undergraduate engineering students if cost is not a major issue, because it offers easier access to cross-disciplinary study, tighter integration with startups and Silicon Valley, and more flexibility to explore within engineering before locking into a path. University of Washington is absolutely strong in engineering, especially with its Seattle tech location and well-regarded programs, but the day-to-day undergraduate experience is usually where the biggest differences show up.

UW has outstanding research too, and Seattle is a real asset for internships and industry ties, but at a larger public university you may need to be more proactive to get the same level of individualized attention and small-scale mentorship.

The third practical comparison is environment. Stanford’s engineering culture often feels more interdisciplinary and invention-oriented, with a lot of emphasis on building, launching, and collaborating across fields. UW can be a better match for someone who wants a big-campus public university experience, strong engineering training, and direct ties to major tech employers in Seattle.
