Is UChicago or Colgate more stressful for undergrads?
I’m trying to get a sense of what the student experience is like at each school, not just academics on paper. I’ve heard both can be intense in different ways, and I’m trying to figure out which one feels more stressful overall for an undergrad.
I’m mostly interested in workload, competitiveness, and campus culture since those seem like the things that would affect day-to-day stress the most.

UChicago is usually perceived as the more stressful place day to day, mainly because the academic culture is more intense, the Core curriculum is demanding across disciplines, and students often describe the campus as intellectually serious in a way that can spill into everyday life. Colgate can absolutely be rigorous, but the overall feel is often less relentlessly academic, with more room for a balanced social rhythm and less pressure to be “on” all the time. If stress for you mostly means constant reading, frequent deep discussion, and a campus where academics are central to identity, UChicago tends to feel heavier.
UChicago fits students who actually like being surrounded by people who debate ideas for fun and do not mind a culture where challenging classes are part of the appeal. The quarter system can make things feel fast and compressed, which adds pressure even for strong students, and the Core means you cannot fully stay inside your comfort zone. It is not necessarily cutthroat in the classic preprofessional sense, but it can be mentally intense because so many students are highly engaged and the workload is consistently real.
Colgate tends to suit students who still want strong academics but in a setting where social life, campus traditions, and community can play a bigger role in daily experience. Stress there can come more from balancing academics with extracurriculars, athletics, or the social scene than from a nonstop intellectual grind. Some students may still find certain majors or classes very demanding, but the campus culture is usually described as less all-consuming academically than UChicago.
On competitiveness, neither school is known for the worst kind of sabotage culture, but UChicago more often feels like you are surrounded by people pushing themselves hard all the time. At Colgate, the pressure can be real, yet the atmosphere is often read as more socially grounded and less defined by academic intensity alone.
So in overall undergraduate stress, UChicago usually comes across as the tougher environment. Colgate can still be challenging, but for many students the stress feels more manageable because the campus culture gives more space to breathe.
