Maryland is usually the better overall value, especially if you are in-state, because its sticker price is much lower than the University of Miami’s and it still offers a large, well-resourced research university experience. Maryland also benefits from its location near Washington, DC, which creates a steady pipeline for internships, government work, research, and employer connections.

The biggest differentiator is cost structure. Miami is a private university, so tuition and total cost of attendance are high across the board, and housing in Coral Gables and the broader Miami area is not cheap either. Maryland, as a public flagship, tends to offer a much more manageable price for in-state families, and that gap is hard to ignore if you are judging value rather than campus vibe or weather.

The next difference is scale of opportunity for the price. Maryland has strong access to internships in DC, nearby federal agencies, nonprofits, consulting, tech, and policy spaces, plus the resources of a major public research institution. Miami absolutely has good opportunities too, especially in business, health-related fields, marine science, and industries tied to South Florida, but the return has to justify a much higher bill.

Another factor is how broadly useful each school’s network is. Miami has a recognizable brand and loyal alumni community, but from a pure value perspective, paying private-school prices only makes sense if the financial aid package brings the cost close to Maryland or if Miami offers something very specific you cannot get as easily at Maryland.
