NYU can absolutely pay off too, but the value depends more heavily on your major, your campus, and how much debt you would need to take on.

A big reason people lean Northwestern on ROI is that its academic reputation is consistently strong across disciplines, and its alumni network is influential in business, media, law, medicine, and academia. That matters because ROI is not just salary, it is salary relative to total borrowing and living costs.

NYU has a real advantage in fields where location matters every semester, not just after graduation. Finance, entertainment, fashion, media, arts, and some tech and startup paths benefit from being embedded in New York. If you are self-directed and likely to capitalize on internships during the school year, NYU’s access can translate into strong earnings and career momentum. But if you pay substantially more for NYU than for Northwestern, that location advantage often does not outweigh the extra debt.
