UNC or Boston University for internship opportunities: which is better?

For internship access during the school year, Boston University has the edge. Being in Boston gives you far more immediate proximity to hospitals, biotech firms, finance and consulting offices, startups, media organizations, nonprofits, and research institutions, and BU students can often intern part-time without needing to leave campus life behind.

BU is especially appealing for students who want internships woven into the rhythm of college. If you like the idea of taking the T to an internship, meeting alumni in the city, and using the school’s urban setting as part of your professional life, BU makes that unusually convenient. The alumni network is also dense in Boston and the Northeast, which helps in industries where local connections and frequent in-person networking still matter.

UNC is still excellent, but it tends to shine most for students who are proactive and willing to use the broader Research Triangle rather than expecting opportunities right outside the dorm. Chapel Hill itself is more college-town than major-city, but UNC benefits from access to Raleigh, Durham, RTP, major healthcare systems, public policy organizations, and strong regional employers. For business, healthcare, research, tech, and public service, UNC students can do very well, especially if they are comfortable driving or organizing their schedule around opportunities a bit farther from campus.

UNC also carries a very strong alumni base, particularly in North Carolina and across the South. That can be a real advantage if you think you may want to build your career in that region, and the university’s reputation opens doors in many fields. I would view UNC as stronger for a student who values a classic campus experience but still wants serious career outcomes, while BU is more naturally set up for constant internship exposure during the academic year.

So if the question is strictly about ease, frequency, and proximity of internship opportunities while you are enrolled, BU is the more favorable environment. UNC absolutely delivers strong outcomes too, but BU’s location makes the path to getting hands-on experience feel more immediate.
