Is Cornell or Bucknell better for engineering undergrad opportunities?

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth and scale versus smaller-class access. Cornell offers a much larger and more nationally visible engineering ecosystem, with more majors, more research labs, more faculty, and stronger recruiting reach across industries. Bucknell gives undergrads closer contact with professors and a more intimate department culture, but it does not match Cornell’s depth of engineering opportunities or employer recognition in the field.

For engineering specifically, Cornell is the stronger option in most ways that matter to undergrads. Its College of Engineering has extensive research activity, a wider range of specialties, and more built-in connections to large employers, startups, and graduate programs. That matters if you want flexibility to explore subfields, join advanced project teams, or pursue research early.

Bucknell is still a respected place to study engineering, and it can be appealing if you want smaller classes, more direct faculty attention, and an undergraduate-centered experience. At Bucknell, it may be easier to stand out in class, get to know professors well, and step into leadership roles without competing in such a large environment. For some students, that translates into strong mentoring and solid outcomes.

But if the question is which school is more powerful for engineering undergrad opportunities overall, the clearer answer is Cornell. Bucknell can be a very good personal fit, but Cornell offers a stronger program, broader research and internship access, and wider employer recognition for engineering.
