Which is better for internships: University of Michigan or Michigan State University?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and keep hearing that both have strong alumni networks. I’m mainly interested in which one gives students better access to internships and career connections while in college.

I’m looking at this as a current high school senior, so I want a general comparison of how internship opportunities usually stack up between the two.

University of Michigan usually offers the stronger edge for internships. Its location ties, employer visibility, and national brand tend to bring in a broader range of recruiters, especially in fields like business, engineering, tech, consulting, and research. Michigan State absolutely has solid internship pathways and a loyal alumni network, but Michigan tends to have more concentrated access to high-profile employers while you are still in school.

One big differentiator is employer recruiting volume and reach. At Michigan, large companies and national organizations are especially active in on-campus recruiting, career fairs, and student org partnerships. That matters because internships often come from repeated employer presence, not just a school having a good reputation.

Another difference is how closely internship access connects to specific programs.

MSU is still very good, particularly for students who are proactive and take advantage of its large alumni base, strong communication, education, hospitality, supply chain, agriculture, and business-related connections. It can be an especially practical option for in-state students looking for good outcomes at a lower cost. But in a broad, school-versus-school comparison focused only on internship access and career connections during college, Michigan has the clearer advantage.
