Which is better for internships: University of Washington or UT Austin?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and employer access during the school year: University of Washington puts you next to Seattle’s tech ecosystem, while UT Austin places you in one of the country’s fastest-growing startup and engineering hubs. For tech and engineering internships, both can open strong doors, but UW usually has the edge for sheer proximity to major tech employers during the academic year, especially because Seattle is home to a dense cluster of software, cloud, biotech, and engineering companies. UT Austin is also excellent, with a very active employer scene and strong recruiting.

If your focus is software, computer engineering, data, cloud, or adjacent tech roles, UW often feels easier from an internship-access standpoint because students can tap into Seattle-area opportunities without leaving the region. That matters for part-time internships, research-to-industry connections, and networking during the school year. UW also benefits from strong ties between campus and local employers in tech and engineering.

UT Austin is hardly behind in opportunity. Austin has become a major destination for tech investment, and UT has a very strong reputation with employers, especially across engineering disciplines. Its alumni network in Texas is also a real asset for internship hunting.

If the question is strictly which campus tends to make strong tech or engineering internships easier to access overall, I would give a slight advantage to University of Washington for tech-focused students because Seattle’s employer concentration is unusually convenient. UT Austin is just as compelling in many engineering areas.
