University of Washington vs UCLA for internships: which school has better internship access?

The biggest practical tradeoff is Seattle’s tighter connection to a concentrated tech and corporate market versus UCLA’s access to a much broader but more spread-out internship landscape in Los Angeles. University of Washington benefits from being in the same city as major employers like Amazon, Microsoft’s nearby presence in the region, and a strong pipeline into Pacific Northwest tech, biotech, and health-related roles. UCLA has reach into entertainment, media, startups, consulting, healthcare, research, and larger Southern California corporate recruiting, but the opportunities are less centralized and often require more initiative to navigate.

For pure internship access, UW often has an edge for students targeting tech, especially software, data, engineering, and some business roles tied to Seattle-area employers. Its location makes in-person networking, part-time internships during the school year, and alumni connections especially practical. UW’s ties to regional companies and its proximity to a dense employer base can make the path from campus to internship feel more direct.

UCLA is stronger if you want variety across industries. Los Angeles offers a huge number of opportunities in entertainment, film, marketing, public affairs, healthcare, and startups, and UCLA’s name carries a lot of weight locally. The challenge is that LA is bigger, more decentralized, and more dependent on students being proactive about commuting, networking, and searching across different parts of the city.

Campus recruiting is solid at both schools, but it tends to be more regionally concentrated at UW and more geographically broad at UCLA. If your main goal is maximizing internship access in tech or adjacent fields, I’d lean toward University of Washington. If you want the widest range of industries and can handle a less centralized search, UCLA likely gives you more total pathways.
