Which is better for internships: University of New Hampshire or UMass Lowell?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and employer access versus a more traditional flagship-campus experience. For internships specifically, UMass Lowell usually has the edge because it sits in a stronger regional job corridor, with easier access to Boston, Cambridge, and the Merrimack Valley during the school year. Its academic setup also leans heavily toward career-connected fields like engineering, business, health, and technology, which tends to create more structured internship pipelines.

UMass Lowell benefits from being close to a dense concentration of companies, hospitals, startups, and government or nonprofit organizations. That matters because during-semester internships are much easier when employers are within commuting distance, and Lowell students can realistically tap opportunities in both the local area and greater Boston.

University of New Hampshire absolutely offers internships and career support, especially in areas like business, environmental sciences, marine/coastal fields, hospitality, and some health-related paths. But Durham is less plugged into a major metro labor market on a day-to-day basis, so in-semester internships can be less convenient unless you have a car or are targeting summer roles. UNH can still be strong if your field lines up with what New Hampshire and the Seacoast region do well, but it is usually a narrower market.

On support, both schools have career centers, fairs, and alumni networks, but UMass Lowell tends to feel more directly career-oriented in the internship search because of its urban access and industry-facing programs. If internships are one of your top decision factors and you want the more practical path to finding one during both the school year and summer, I’d give the nod to UMass Lowell.
