The biggest practical tradeoff is that Dartmouth is built around a true small-town campus experience, while Harvard gives you a college-centered neighborhood inside a much larger urban area. Dartmouth is in Hanover, New Hampshire, where the college dominates daily life and the town revolves heavily around the school. Harvard sits in Cambridge, where Harvard Square feels very student-centered, but you are still part of a dense city environment next to Boston.

In everyday life, Dartmouth will feel much more close-knit. Students spend a lot of time on or near the Green, campus traditions are highly visible, and social life is concentrated because there are fewer off-campus distractions. It tends to create the sense that most people are sharing the same rhythms, spaces, and events.

Harvard can absolutely feel connected to its surroundings, but the atmosphere is less insulated and less small-town.
