University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs. Notre Dame for communications: which is better for undergrads?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list and I’m comparing UIUC and Notre Dame for communications. I want to study something in media, journalism, or PR, and both schools keep coming up for different reasons.

I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally stronger for an undergraduate communications major and the kinds of opportunities each school tends to give students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy. UIUC gives you a much larger public-university media ecosystem with more program variety, more student outlets, and stronger direct ties to journalism, advertising, and strategic communication fields, while Notre Dame offers a smaller, more personal undergraduate experience with strong advising, tight alumni connections, and a broader liberal arts approach rather than a classic preprofessional communications setup.

For media, journalism, and PR specifically, UIUC is usually the more straightforward academic match. Its communications-related options are broader and more industry-facing, and the size of the campus creates a lot of hands-on opportunities through student media, campus organizations, and internships connected to a major Big Ten environment. If you already know you want something like journalism, advertising, media production, or public relations, UIUC tends to make that path easier to build.

Notre Dame can still be excellent, but it is stronger for students who want communications within a more traditional humanities and liberal arts framework. You may get smaller classes, closer faculty access, and a very engaged alumni network, but the media and journalism infrastructure is not usually the first reason students choose Notre Dame. It is often a better fit for someone who wants communication skills paired with writing, politics, ethics, business, or public affairs rather than a heavily specialized media track.

Opportunity-wise, UIUC likely gives you more sheer volume. There are simply more outlets, more peers in adjacent fields, and more room to try different niches before settling on one. Notre Dame’s advantage is that undergraduate access can feel less crowded and mentorship can be easier to develop.

If the question is which school is stronger specifically for an undergrad focused on media, journalism, or PR, I’d lean UIUC. I would put Notre Dame ahead only if you care more about a smaller private-school environment, tighter undergraduate attention, and a communications-adjacent education rather than the broadest communications-specific platform.
