Is UC Davis or University of Richmond better for value?

UC Davis is the better value for most students, especially if you are a California resident, because its in-state cost is much lower while the academic reputation, research access, and career outcomes are strong across many majors. It is a large, well-resourced public research university with especially notable strength in biological sciences, agriculture, environmental fields, engineering, and pre-health pathways. Richmond can absolutely be worth it, but usually only if its financial aid package brings the net cost close to or below Davis.

One major differentiator is price structure. UC Davis often delivers a very favorable cost-to-opportunity balance for in-state students since you get access to a major UC campus, broad course offerings, and strong employer recognition without private-school tuition. University of Richmond has a much higher sticker price, so its value depends much more heavily on your actual aid offer than on the published cost.

Another difference is the kind of academic experience you are buying. Richmond offers smaller classes, closer faculty access, and a more intimate undergraduate environment, which can be a real advantage if you learn best with more direct support and discussion-based teaching. UC Davis gives you the scale of a major research university, including more labs, more specialized departments, and a wider range of student organizations and academic pathways.

Career value also tilts toward UC Davis in breadth. The UC name carries strong recognition, and Davis has deep pipelines into California industries, research, healthcare, government, and graduate programs. Richmond has solid outcomes too, especially in business, economics, politics, and finance, but its network is smaller and more regionally concentrated.

UC Davis wins on value if you are paying anything close to in-state public pricing. Richmond becomes very compelling only when its aid substantially lowers the net cost and when you specifically want the small private-school experience enough for that difference to matter.
