Is UC Davis or Ohio State worth it for college if both are affordable options?

The biggest practical tradeoff is environment: UC Davis offers a classic college-town experience built around a research university, while Ohio State gives you a much larger, more urban Big Ten campus with broader scale in student life, athletics, and alumni reach. Both are well-regarded public universities with strong academics and plenty of opportunities, so “worth it” comes down less to prestige and more to where you would actually thrive for four years. Davis is especially appealing for students who want a calmer, bike-friendly setting and close faculty access in many departments, while Ohio State tends to feel bigger, busier, and more expansive in sheer resources.

Academically, neither is a weak choice. UC Davis stands out in life sciences, agriculture, environmental fields, animal science, and several health-related pathways, and it benefits from being part of the UC system. Ohio State has enormous breadth, very strong engineering and business visibility, major research activity, and the advantages that come with a huge flagship university that offers just about everything.

For outcomes, both can lead to strong internships, research, grad school placement, and jobs, but they do it a little differently. Ohio State’s size and alumni network can be a real asset, especially in business, engineering, and large-employer recruiting. UC Davis can be especially attractive if you value access to California industries, UC name recognition, and fields tied to biotech, agriculture, environment, or pre-health preparation.

In terms of student experience, they feel quite different day to day. Davis is more self-contained and laid-back, with a strong campus-community identity. Ohio State is more high-energy and high-volume, with major sports culture, a huge student population, and more of a city-campus feel in Columbus.
