Which is considered more prestigious for engineering: Cornell or Virginia Tech?

Cornell is usually viewed as the more prestigious name overall for engineering. It carries Ivy League brand recognition, has a very broad national and international reputation, and is commonly seen as more selective, which shapes how people perceive its engineering school. Virginia Tech is also highly respected in engineering, especially among employers and in certain fields, but it does not usually have the same across-the-board prestige halo.

One big difference is name recognition outside engineering circles. Cornell tends to impress people in academia, finance, tech, consulting, and international settings simply because its institutional reputation is so strong. If someone is talking about pure brand value, Cornell usually comes out ahead.

Another difference is how each school is known within engineering itself. That tends to boost its prestige in faculty and academic circles, while Virginia Tech is often praised more for producing capable engineers at scale and for strong career preparation.

So if the question is strictly prestige and reputation, Cornell usually has the edge. If the question is employer respect for engineering training, Virginia Tech is still a serious peer in many contexts and not a distant second.
