Is Cornell or Dartmouth better for public policy?

Cornell has the edge for public policy. Its policy ecosystem is broader and more built out at the undergraduate level, especially through the Brooks School of Public Policy, which gives the field a clearer institutional home than Dartmouth offers.

The biggest differentiator is the academic structure. At Cornell, public policy is not just an interest you piece together from government, economics, and sociology courses. The Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy is a dedicated school with undergraduate pathways tied directly to policy analysis, health policy, environmental policy, inequality, labor, and public affairs. That makes it easier to find focused coursework, advising, and classmates who are pursuing similar goals.

A second difference is the range of applied opportunities. Cornell’s scale helps here: there are more research centers, more faculty working in policy-adjacent fields, and more chances to connect policy study with data, economics, law, public health, agriculture, labor, and urban issues. For a student who wants to test different policy areas before narrowing in, Cornell usually offers more room to do that.

Dartmouth absolutely offers strong government and social science preparation, and its smaller size can mean close faculty relationships, but it does not have the same dedicated undergraduate public policy infrastructure.

For public policy specifically, Cornell is the more developed platform.
