Is UCLA or UC Berkeley better for neuroscience?

UCLA has the edge for undergraduate neuroscience, especially if you want a more established neuroscience major, easier alignment with pre-med coursework, and direct access to a major medical campus. Berkeley is outstanding in brain science too, but for an undergrad focused specifically on neuroscience as a major and pre-med preparation, UCLA is usually the cleaner academic fit.

One big differentiator is the structure of the major itself. UCLA has a dedicated neuroscience major that is well integrated with life science advising and common pre-med requirements, so the path tends to feel more straightforward.

Research access is another important difference. Both campuses offer serious lab opportunities, but UCLA benefits from being tied closely to a major academic medical center, which expands options in translational neuroscience, neurology, psychiatry, neuroimaging, and clinical research. Berkeley has exceptional basic science research and a very strong culture of discovery, especially if you are interested in computation, cognition, or cellular and molecular work, but UCLA often offers more of the hospital-connected experiences that pre-meds specifically look for.

The pre-med environment also leans UCLA. You can complete strong pre-med preparation at either school, but UCLA’s ecosystem makes it easier to connect neuroscience with shadowing, volunteering, and medically adjacent research in one place. Berkeley can be a fantastic choice if you are more drawn to the theoretical, quantitative, or cross-disciplinary side of neuroscience, especially in areas overlapping with psychology, data science, or bioengineering.
