Is UT Dallas or Texas State better for business majors?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UT Dallas tends to offer a more career-driven, academically rigorous business environment with stronger ties to the Dallas job market, while Texas State usually offers a more traditional college experience at a school that is solid but less business-centered in reputation. For business specifically, UT Dallas’s Naveen Jindal School of Management is one of the school’s biggest draws and is closely connected to internships and recruiting in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Texas State’s McCoy College of Business is respected, especially within Texas, but it does not usually carry the same level of name recognition among employers for business as UT Dallas.

If your priority is academics and career opportunity for business, UT Dallas has the edge. Its location matters a lot: being in the Dallas metro means easier access to internships during the school year, more nearby corporate offices, and a stronger pipeline into finance, accounting, analytics, IT-related business roles, and consulting-adjacent work. UT Dallas also tends to attract students who are very focused on internships, networking, and job outcomes.

Texas State can still be a good choice, especially if cost, campus life, or fit matter more to you. It has a more classic residential feel, more visible school spirit, and a campus culture many students find more lively and social than UT Dallas. For some students, that environment makes it easier to thrive, and that can matter just as much as raw program reputation.

For business alone, I’d lean UT Dallas unless Texas State is meaningfully cheaper or feels like a much better personal fit. The business program at UT Dallas is more of a standout feature of the university, and the access to the Dallas market gives it a practical advantage that is hard to ignore.
